Mike McGill is one of the great legends of skateboarding today. Best known for inventing the trick entitled the "McTwist", an inverted 540 degree mute grab aerial, McGill grew up in New York, then moved to Florida at the age of 10.  Venturing west in the mid-80s to join Bones Brigade, the Encinitas resident has owned and operated McGill's Skateshop since 1987.

This weekend, McGill will barge in on a session with his long time friends and teammates at the Clash at Clairemont, a cooperative effort between Pro Skateboarder Andy Macdonald, the YMCA, and Grind for Life.

In this episode of Talking Story, Cantore talks to McGill and the founder of Grind for Life, life-long skateboarder Mike Rogers, a two-time cancer survivor.  Grind for Life provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families when traveling long distances to doctors and hospitals.

If you hit his Instagram, Oceanside's Hans Molenkamp can be seen traveling the world while hanging and training with some of the biggest names in the UFC. The owner of Triumph United, training equipment and apparel for mixed martial artists (MMA,) Hans played a critical role in introducing the sport to San Diego over a decade ago.  

As a professional photographer, Hans specialized in portrait and product photography shooting for major action sports companies and publications. Hans currently runs the combat sports division at Monster Energy. Hans photographs all of the Monster Energy athletes and designs all of the product for Triumph United.

Hans is devoted to martial arts and holds a Black Belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and has fought in Muay Thai and Vale Tudo events.

Former Major League Baseball (MLB) star turned podcaster Aubrey Huff is Talking Story with Chris Cantore about the highs and lows of life in / out of the majors. Huff played 13 seasons in the majors (2000-12) for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, and San Francisco Giants -- where he won two World Series Championships. 

In this episode, Huff candidly talks about growing up without a father (who was tragically murdered,) his plight to becoming a professional ballplayer, and the depression, anxiety, and drug addiction that followed.

If you're a San Diego surfer, you know the name "Bird" Huffman. The owner of Bird's Surf Shed, Huffman also delivers surf reports for local radio and Surfline.

Prior to the Sheds, Bird owned South Coast Surf Shops in Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach.  Throughout his 45+ years in the surf industry, Bird has gifted thousands of San Diegans (and visitors) with the stoke of surfing -- including the host of Talking Story, Chris Cantore.  

Bird, now in his 60's, was gracious with his time and wisdom in the following insightful episode.

On this episode of Cantore + YEW!, Cantore talks to a stray cat and a dog. Specifically, legendary drummer of The Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, and Jason Gann, star and creator of the critically acclaimed Wilfred.

Rockabilly legends The Stray Cats have reunited to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a new album and world tour.  It's the band's first San Diego show in 27 years. The Stray Cats tour wraps up at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay on August 31st.  Drummer Slim Jim Phantom talks to Cantore before tickets go on sale.

First, Jason Gann, Australian-American comedian, actor and creator of the critically acclaimed stoner comedy Wilfred, checks in with Cantore + YEW! to promote his upcoming appearance at March and Ash in Mission Valley on 4/20.  His first time showing up to a dispensary in the ACTUAL Wilfred dog costume, Gann is introducing San Diego to his line of joints, aptly called Wilfred Cannabis Pre-Rolls.

After Bradley Nowell's death in 1996, he never saw the success of Sublime’s final album, which has since been listed as one of the most well-regarded albums of the 1990s by Spin and Rolling Stone.  Dying two months before its release, Nowell left behind a son and longtime girlfriend / new wife Troy Dendekker, AKA Mama Troy.

In this episode of the Cantore + YEW! podcast, Chris talks to Mama Troy about coming of age in San Diego, meeting Bradley Nowell of Sublime, coping with his loss, and helping carry on the band's legacy.

Mama Troy also talks about her son with Bradley, Jakob, frontman of his own Long Beach band, LAW.

Cantore visits TV personality, author, and cook-extraordinaire, Sam the Cooking Guy, at his new restaurant, Not Not Tacos, opening this week in the Little Italy Food Hall with hospitality group Grain & Grit Collective. Not Not Tacos will serve up genre-bending fare that pushes the envelope of culinary creativity with tacos that are big, bold, full of flavor and made from things not normally found in authentic Mexican food (looking at you meatloaf, salmon & pastrami.)

Before introducing us to the restaurant, Sam opens up to Cantore about his insecurities and the pressures of coexisting in a modern world that puts so much value on wealth and material items. Also, great discussion about how weed can perpetuate self-doubt.
